Makes: 8 servings

Total Time: 40 minutes

· 1lb lean ground beef

· 1lb ground Italian sausage

· 1 cup seasoned Italian bread crumbs

· ½ cup finely grated Parmesan

· 4 cloves garlic, minced

· 1 tablespoon fresh basil, finely chopped

· 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped

· 1 teaspoon dried oregano

· 2 large eggs, beaten

· 1 teaspoon salt

· ½ teaspoon black pepper

· 3 tablespoons olive oil

· 1 medium yellow onion

· 4 cloves garlic, minced

· 56oz crushed tomatoes

· 2 bay leaves

· Salt and pepper to taste

· 2 tablespoons basil, finely chopped

· 1lb spaghetti

· Fresh parmesan for garnish

· Fresh basil for garnish

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

In a large bowl, add beef, sausage, bread crumbs, cheese, garlic, herbs, eggs, salt and pepper. Stir until combined. Scoop and roll into 2-inch meatballs.

In a large, heavy pot heat olive oil over medium-high heat until it starts to shimmer. Add meatballs in batches, being careful not to overcrowd. Brown well on the bottoms before turning, then turn and repeat until browned on all sides. Remove meatballs to a plate lined with paper towels.

In the same skillet, over medium heat, add more oil if needed and then sauté chopped onion until soft and golden. Add 4 cloves garlic and stir 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Stir in 2 cans crushed tomatoes and bay leaves. Bring to a gentle boil.

Add meatballs to the pan with the sauce and partially cover. Gently simmer for 30 minutes, turning the meatballs occasionally. At 25 minutes, stir in fresh basil and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and return to the empty pot.

Pour sauce and meatballs over spaghetti and toss gently to combine. Garnish with Parmesan and basil and serve hot.
