How to Carve a Pumpkin

You have picked the perfect pumpkins from the patch and now it is time to remember how to carve a pumpkin. Don’t worry, we have an easy step by step guide to get you started!

  • Step 1: Prep the Pumpkins & Tools
    • Thoroughly clean your carving tools with hot water and soap. Then clean the exterior of the pumpkin thoroughly. Set up your area with a disposable plastic tablecloth or craft paper to make for easy cleanup.
  • Step 2: Gather Tools
    • Chef’s knife or serrated bread knife – for cutting the hole in the top of your pumpkin
    • Metal spoon – a stiff metal serving spoon is perfect for scraping out the inside of the pumpkin
    • X-acto knife – perfect for all of those teeny tiny details like teeth, hair, eyes, etc. Just be careful!
    • Serrated vegetable knife – these are perfect for bigger cuts and removing portions of pumpkin
  • Step 3: Draw Your Design
    • Using a marker, sketch out all aspects of your design. Then mark your circular lid around the pumpkin stem, around 6 inches in diameter depending on the size of the pumpkin.
  • Step 4: Start Carving
    • Start by cutting out the lid at a 45 degree angle, then remove the seeds and guts. Once the inside is scooped out and clean, start cutting out your design. Wipe down and insert candle.
  • Step 5: Roast the Seeds
    • Stop! Don’t throw away those yummy seeds! It may be a little squishy, but sift through the pumpkin guts and pull out the seeds. Clean them then dry. Toss on a baking sheet with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast for 20-25 minutes in a 300 F oven.
